extra-mural is the latest participatory digital drawing project brought to you by artists Jeannie Driver and Mike Blackman.
Visitors to the “where do you draw the line” exhibition, May 22nd - 27th June 2010 at the Bargate Gallery, Southampton are invited to join in with this experimental work. Your participation is desired!
What is it about?
The word extramural, means ‘occurring or situated outside of the city walls or boundaries’. The shopping precinct of Above Bar, to the north of the Bargate Monument, is outside the original city walls, and this area forms our canvas for a digital drawing.
The first element of this work is to ‘reveal’ a drawing in the gallery, making connections between spaces and places. This ‘reveal’ can be best explained as similar to the techniques of brass rubbing. In this case, participants with a GPS tracker become the crayon, the environment the brass plate and the gallery wall the sheet of paper.
Participants' data from the tracker will be projected in the gallery creating their own drawings, and eventually accumulate to reveal the drawing that references the Bargate monument. This is best viewed at the gallery, however the work can also be seen here at EXTRA-MURAL LIVE. Please note however we have had to rotate the drawing for the web page.
All data, as individual line drawings, can also be accessed under ‘your Drawings’
